Materials science and engineering is a multidisciplinary field involving collaborations across traditional academic programs.  The Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) program at the University of Wyoming brings together students and faculty with research interests and expertise in materials science and engineering from physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, geology, and mechanical engineering. Current strengths at UW include nanotechnology, new materials synthesis, advanced materials characterization, as well as computational methods for materials design.  Through a weekly seminar series and annual symposium, as well as access to a broad range of sophisticated instrumentation, the MSE program provides a rich, collaborative research environment for graduate students, research scientists, and faculty.

The goals of the Wyoming NASA EPSCoR project align with the MSE program and are focused on the development of a cohesive program in materials science at the University of Wyoming that is aligned with stated NASA objectives regarding materials science research. The core funding for Wyoming NASA EPSCoR continues to support the development of the MSE program by supporting faculty seed grants, graduate fellowships, a MSE Speaker Series, Seminar Course, Graduate Symposium, and travel grants.  This funding has enabled the formation of a cohesive, collaborative group in materials science aimed at furthering NASA goals in materials science research, meeting jurisdiction needs, and strengthening University academic goals and areas of distinction.
