BALLOON FLIGHT OPPORTUNITIES

K-12 Outreach Flights

Our K-12 outreach flights make up the vast majority (88%) of our high-altitude balloon flights. Since 2014, we have visited dozens of K-12 schools and organizations all over Wyoming, reaching thousands of students. Participants are given the chance to build their own payloads to fly with the balloon into the near-space environment of the stratosphere. This type of authentic, hands-on STEM experience is a unique opportunity to leave a lasting impression on young minds. Teachers and educators can request to host a balloon launch at their own school. College Flights

We occasionally participate in college-level research projects and plan to continue these efforts into the near future. In the past, we’ve supported student teams for the National Eclipse Ballooning Project, where the students conducted balloon flights before, during, and after the total solar eclipses in 2017 and 2024. From 2019–2021, we supported the LIFT Project, an undergraduate science outreach program at UW in which undergraduate interns from UW developed payloads and accompanying curriculum centered around high-altitude ballooning. We’ve also conducted one-off flights for several other college groups to help them test their own payload devices and electronics. Visit our College Flights page to learn more!

Science Fair Flights

This is a new addition to our high-altitude balloon program. Students can now utilize our high-altitude balloon program to collect data for their science fair projects. We firmly believe there are science fair projects that would greatly benefit from our high-altitude balloon resources. There’s no doubt in our minds that bright young students in Wyoming would take advantage of this opportunity. Both junior- and senior-level science fair students can now request space on a flight for the purpose of collecting science fair data. Requests must be accompanied by a brief proposal that includes a description of their project and justification for flight space. Visit our Science Fair Flights page to learn more!
