Student Highlights: Bree Drew

Bree Drew, one of our undergraduate research fellowship recipients for 2024–2025, was recently featured in the 2025 issue of Roots & Ranges, a publication of UW’s College of Agriculture, Life Sciences and Natural Resources.

Majoring in plant production and protection, Bree’s research has focused on testing various lettuce harvest techniques to assess their potential viability in space. Astronauts currently use a method called “cut and come again” to harvest lettuce. However, Bree’s findings suggest that an alternative method, called “cut and sow”, may yield better results both in terms of growth and quality.

The article delves deeper into these findings while also highlighting Bree’s journey into the sciences and the impact her Space Grant fellowship has had in all of this. We won’t rehash these details here. Instead, you can read the article for yourself on pages 7–9 at this link.

Congratulations Bree!

ABOUT STUDENT HIGHLIGHTS

Every year, we award fellowships to graduate and undergraduate students attending the University of Wyoming or Wyoming’s community colleges in order to provide them with funding to engage in real-world research opportunities. Occasionally, we feature one of these students and their research on this blog. For more information about our student fellowships, visit our College Programs page.
