About the Events:

Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Conferences are designed to allow young women in grades 7 through 12 to learn first-hand about careers in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology from accomplished professional women. Many young women in junior high and high school start to lose interest in science and engineering careers. The goal of the Women in STEM Conferences held at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, and at Central Wyoming College in Riverton, is to directly address this problem. The conferences will be a cooperative effort supported by local agencies, schools, and businesses, in addition to several state agencies. By presenting positive role models in the science, mathematics, and engineering fields, we hope to encourage all students (especially young women and minorities) to pursue higher education and careers in math, science, and engineering.  The Women in STEM conference also allows us to highlight outstanding achievements by young women interested in STEM by giving awards for NCWIT Aspirations in Computing.  These awards help build a talent pool for the growing technical workforce and encourage diversity in computer science!

Making connections with people who are accomplished in mathematics, science, engineering, or related occupations is one of the best ways to promote student aspirations and achievements. We believe our conferences will provide a forum for young women to learn about the endless opportunities available in math, science, and engineering related career fields and to create personal connections with professional women.

The National Weather Service Office in Cheyenne and Wyoming NASA Space Grant have had many successful Women in STEM Conferences (formerly Women in Science) beginning in 1998. Each year we seek support from businesses, agencies, and civic organizations to help with the Women in STEM conference. Support can be provided in a variety of forms: funding, volunteering, presenting workshops, donation of door prizes, and more.

If you would like to support the Women in STEM Conference at the University of Wyoming or get involved, please contact the Wyoming NASA Space Grant Office. The Women in STEM Conference is held annually in mid-May.
